Dramatic Footage Emerges on Social Media

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border on Monday could rise eight-fold, according to experts. The 7.8 magnitude quake occurred at 4:17 AM local time, near the city of Gaziantep, and was followed by a series of aftershocks.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the earthquake occurred at 4:04 AM local time (1:04 AM GMT) at a depth of 17.9 kilometers. The epicenter was located in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş province, which lies close to the Turkish-Syrian border.

Dramatic footage shared on social media shows the moment the earthquake struck, causing buildings to collapse and sending people running in panic. The quake was felt in neighboring Syria, where at least 1,000 people have been killed, according to reports.

Rescue teams from Turkey and around the world are working tirelessly to locate survivors and provide aid to those affected. The death toll is expected to continue to rise as rescue efforts continue. The earthquake is the deadliest to hit Turkey since 1999, when a 7.6 magnitude quake killed more than 17,000 people.
