Starliner Nears International Space Station for Critical Crewed Flight Test
Boeing and NASA Prepare for Historic Mission
Approaching the International Space Station
Boeings Starliner spacecraft is nearing the International Space Station (ISS) in preparation for a critical crewed flight test. The uncrewed mission, known as OFT-2, will pave the way for Starliner to begin flying astronauts to and from the ISS as part of NASAs Commercial Crew Program.
Successful Launch and Rendezvous
Starliner launched atop an Atlas V rocket on May 19, 2023, and successfully reached orbit. The spacecraft performed a series of maneuvers to approach and rendezvous with the ISS, capturing the stations robotic arm on May 20, 2023.
Flight Test Objectives
During OFT-2, Starliner will demonstrate its ability to safely transport astronauts to and from the ISS. The mission will focus on testing the following systems:
- Rendezvous and docking capabilities
- Life support and environmental control systems
- Propulsion and navigation systems
Boeing and NASA Collaboration
Boeing and NASA have been working closely together to develop the Starliner spacecraft. The collaboration is part of NASAs Commercial Crew Program, which aims to foster the development of commercial spacecraft capable of transporting astronauts to and from the ISS.
Upcoming Crewed Mission
The successful completion of OFT-2 will pave the way for Starliners first crewed mission, Boeing Crew Flight Test-1 (CFT-1). CFT-1 is scheduled to launch in May 2024 and will carry four astronauts to the ISS.
Historic Milestone
The upcoming crewed Starliner mission will mark a historic milestone for Boeing and NASA. It will be the first time that a commercial spacecraft carries astronauts to the ISS.
