WEB Cleaning Conserving and Restoring Boeing Santa Susana
WEB Rocket Testing Proving Ground
The former Simi Hills field lab was a key proving ground for the US Space program rocket engines that propelled Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions into orbit. Rocket engine testing for the US Government began at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in 1947 as America built its space program. The site which spans 2850 acres features remote and rugged terrain, providing an ideal location for testing high-powered rocket engines.
WEB Cold War and Nuclear Research
Santa Susana was also home to a variety of other research and development activities, including nuclear research and energy production. A rocket engine test and energy research site for federal government programs, Santa Susana was where thousands of workers tested rocket engines used to defend the country and land on the Moon.
WEB Boeing's Role
Since 1954, Area II of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory has been operated by Boeing, Rockwell, and its predecessor, North American Aviation (NAA), under USAF facility contracts. In 1973, the USAF Plant 57 Area II land was transferred to NASA and the USAF. Since 1996, Boeing has conducted operations at the SSFL. Predecessor companies to Boeing have included the Rocketdyne Propulsion and Power Division, Rocketdyne of NAA, and the Space and Strategic Missiles Division of NAA.
