Fire at California battery storage facility triggers evacuation order
Flames engulf Tesla Megapack at Moss Landing power plant
Residents within a half-mile radius told to leave as firefighters battle the blaze
A fire broke out at a battery storage facility in Moss Landing, California, on Tuesday morning, triggering an evacuation order for residents within a half-mile radius, with smoke visible for miles, according to local reports.
The facility, owned by Tesla and operated by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), stores energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind power, and is part of a growing network of such facilities in California and around the world.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but PG&E said in a statement that it began in one of the facility's battery packs and quickly spread to others.
