'Hellish' Scene Unfolds as Wildfire Races Toward California Mountain Community

Communities Flee as Flames Approach

A wildfire has exploded in size, forcing thousands to flee as it races toward the mountain community of Idyllwild in Southern California. Dubbed the Cranston Fire, the blaze has burned over 12,000 acres since it erupted on Monday, sending residents scrambling for safety.

"It's a hellish scene," Idyllwild resident Susan LaMorte told the Los Angeles Times. "The flames are so high, and the smoke is so thick, it's hard to breathe."

Wildfire Fueled by Strong Winds

The fire has been fueled by strong winds and dry conditions. It's believed to have started near Cranston, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Idyllwild. By Tuesday morning, it had jumped Highway 243, cutting off access to the community from the east.

Fires Expand Rapidly

The fire's spread has been rapid, with flames jumping from treetop to treetop. The Los Angeles Times reported that the blaze moved across 7,000 acres in just four hours on Monday. As it burns, it's sending up huge plumes of smoke that can be seen for miles.

Evacuations Ordered in Idyllwild

As the fire approached Idyllwild, officials issued mandatory evacuation orders for the entire community. Residents were told to leave immediately, and many were forced to flee on foot or by bicycle.

"I grabbed what I could and ran," said resident Paul Smith. "I don't know if my house is still standing or not."

Firefighters Battle the Blaze

Firefighters from across Southern California are battling the blaze, but it's a difficult fight. The wind is constantly shifting, making it hard to predict which way the fire will spread.

There are no reports of injuries or deaths at this time, but the situation is fluid and could change rapidly.

Communities Under Threat

In addition to Idyllwild, several other mountain communities are under threat from the fire. Pine Cove, Fern Valley, and Mountain Center have all been placed under evacuation orders.

The Cranston Fire is just one of several wildfires currently burning in California. The state is in the midst of a severe drought, and the dry conditions have made the area vulnerable to wildfires.
